COVER DESIGNS
In 2009, one of the editions of Pelican was themed "Superpowers". In order to create an effective, bold cover, I decided to take a familiar image (Obama's presidential campaign image)and depict him as a superhero with the archetypal eye mask. While the USA was historically seen as a world "Superpower", this public perception has shifted along with the chaos of the Bush presidency and Iraq war. Obama entered politics and was raised onto a pedestal, with expectations that his position as the first Black president of the United States would change their country for the best. He represented hope and was thus likened to a superhero for many Americans.
In 2012, I had the opportunity to design a Pelican cover themed "Quarantine the Past", which references the 2010 compilation album released by the band, Pavement. Initially, the editor and I toyed with featuring Pavement's lead singer and guitarist, Stephen Malkmus on the cover, however we settled with placing his portrait on the contents page. Instead, I was given some creative freedom and came up with a young woman looking contemplative and wistfully recalling the past. She is positioned next to an image of herself as a child with a tricycle, which collectively represent her memories.
